This Fight Is Not Over

By Kourtney McVey

From the age of three,

we are taught how to be

obedient and polite.

We never question our rights,

Play nice, look pretty.

Always smile, because

“You look better when you smile!”

We fit into a mold,

So old and outdated,

We all start to notice,

It no longer suits us.

So we strengthen our bones,

We learn and we grow.

And our once quiet voices

Start coming out like a roar.

And our steps echo through hallways

We’ve never been allowed before.

And our march to equality

Seems daunting and cruel,

But we keep moving forward.

Because the fight is not over

There is much more to do.
