Ayla’s story is an all too familiar tale of a woman building the strength to leave an abusive relationship.
Trigger Warning: Assault; Abuse; Control
“It took me a long time to get this into writing. A lot of back and forth on if I wanted to mention this part of my life. But I knew that if I didn’t do this I would still be letting him win. I knew pretty early on that I needed to leave the relationship with my ex. It started subtle. He tried to control everything, from the money I spent to the people I was around. He would accuse me of cheating on him when I would run to the store. That eventually led to him being physically abusive. I thought that I could change him, and that it wasn’t his fault he was like this. Because he too had past trauma. Then one day he went too far. He tased me and put a belt around my neck until I passed out. I got a hold of friends and family and got out in the night. I still have some trust issues and occasionally nightmares. But I have overcome this. And I have an amazing husband who has helped me get through this.”
